5 years residence – you will need to have been residing in the UK lawfully and continuously for at least 5 years before the date of your application with no absences totalling more than 450 days during those 5 years and no more than 90 days in the last 12 months.
Indefinite leave to remain – You must have this status for the last 12 months if you are a non-EEA national or permanent residence status for the last 12 months if you are an EEA national, unless an exemption applies.
Good character – key aspects are that you have not been in breach of the immigration rules or have committed any criminal offences during your lawful stay.
Language and values – you will need to demonstrate knowledge of English language and life in the UK.
Application and supporting documents
To apply for British citizenship, you need to complete the relevant form as suited to your respective category and submit it to the Home Office along with your supporting documents.
One your application has been approved, you will be required to attend a citizenship ceremony where you will be given your naturalisation certificate. You can then apply for a British passport.
