How to apply for an Exceptional Talent Visa

There are 2 stages in the application process for this route:

Stage 1 – Endorsement

You need to be endorsed by one of the Designated Competent Bodies listed below, who will inform the Home Office that you meet the qualifying and eligibility criteria and have reached the appropriate level to be endorsed under this route:

  • Arts Council England – for arts and culture applications;
  • The British Academy – for humanities and social science applications;
  • The Royal Society – for natural sciences and medical science research applications;
  • The Royal Academy of Engineering – for engineering applications;
  • Tech City UK – for digital technology applications. If you are applying to be considered by Tech City UK, you must also complete a separate form that includes questions specific to digital technology applicants.

Exceptional talent or Exceptional Promise

You must demonstrate that you have made a significant contribution as a leader in your field. If you are unable to provide evidence of your contribution you must show the potential to make significant contributions as a future leader in your field.

Once you have received an endorsement from the Designated Competent Body, you will have passed stage 1 of the process and you can then move onto stage 2.

Stage 2 – Immigration Application

At this stage, you need to submit your visa application form to the Home Office along with a copy of your endorsement letter.  You must apply for stage 2 within 3 months of receiving your endorsement, otherwise your application will be refused and you will have to re-apply for a new endorsement.

If your application is approved from outside the UK, you will be granted with 5 years and 4 months initial leave or leave for 5 years if you are applying from inside the UK. You can apply to extend your leave for a maximum period of 5 years.  You may apply for settlement once you’ve been in the UK for 3 years under the exceptional talent criteria or if you’ve been in the UK for 5 years under the exceptional promise criteria.

Family members visa based on Exceptional talent visa

Your family members (partners and children under 18) can apply to join you in the UK under this visa. Once your application is approved, you will be granted leave in line with the main applicant’s leave. If you wish to apply for further leave or apply for settlement in the UK, this again will be in accordance with the leave granted to the main applicant.
