The new High Potential Individual visa

The new High Potential Individual (HPI) visa route opened on 30 May 2022.  Under this route international graduates who have qualified from the most prestigious universities recognised by the Home Office in the last 5 years, are able to work in the UK without a job offer/sponsorship, set up a business or work as self-employed.

The HPI will be permitted to stay in the UK for at least 2 years if they have completed a qualification at the same level as a UK bachelor’s degree or postgraduate degree and 3 years if they have completed a qualification at the same level as a UK PhD or doctorate.  The degree must have been awarded within the five years of the application and from the list published by the Home Office on the Gov.uk website.

The HPI must prove their knowledge of English to a minimum of B1 level in four components – reading, writing, speaking and listening unless their degree was taught in English. They must also prove they have enough personal savings to support themselves and their family in the UK (unless they have been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months).  The funds must have been held for 28 consecutive days of applying for the visa.

The cost involved in an HPI visa application are as follows:

  • Application fee – £715.00
  • Immigration Health Surcharge – £624.00 per year (2yrs – £1248.00 or 3yrs – £1,872.00)
  • Ecctis (previously NARIC) – £210.00 + VAT to verify the qualification
  • Personal savings  – at least £1,270.00 (unless exempt)
